New method with patent pending leak test is launched for tubes

The company Norden Machinery, based in Kalmar, Sweden, is now launching a tube filling

The company Norden Machinery, based in Kalmar, Sweden, is now launching a tube filling system that tests tubes for leaks in full production rate and with complete quality control. The leak test is based on the Swedish company Adixen’s unique sensor technology for hydrogen.

“This technology is completely new in the business and is patent pending”, said Adixen R&D Director Fredrik Enquist.

Leaking tube packaging can sometimes stop production which as a result leads to both pollution and disposal of materials. Traditionally, the tubes are tested by random sampling, but these methods are ineffective as the damage already has been done.

Adixen Scandinavia and Norden Machinery have therefore jointly developed a device that test plastic and laminate tubes for leaks at high speed immediately after the filling process. The machine fills the tubes with liquid content, such as creams. The tubes are then tested for leaks with high sensitivity while they are “in-line” and at full production speed. If a tube should leak it will be discarded immediately and only non-leaking tubes will be packed which saves time and money.

“We have integrated our newest model, a detector for hydrogen leak testing in one of Norden Machinery’s tube filling systems and added a newly developed software capable of testing for leaks up to 100 cycles per minute“, says Fredrik Enquist. “This is something completely new in the industry, which has a high demand for leak detection in connection with filling tubes”, he continues.

The leak detector is a further development of Adixen’s proven ASH 2000-tested instruments that has been integrated into a machine by Norden Machinery. The tube filling system has a nozzle that fills each package with 8 millilitres of a five percent hydrogen mixture (E949). After the package is sealed it is quickly tested for leaks by a sensor. The gas for each test costs about € 0.00011. This means that a 50 litre gas bottle is enough for approximately one million tubes.

“The new equipment is ready for production and is currently being tested by one of our customers, “said Lars Hammarstedt, Marketing Manager at Norden. “With this we can offer a totally new and highly sought-after product in the packaging industry, which both increases productivity and quality as well as lowering costs. The solution is patent pending”, he adds.
